------------ WELCOME TO PROFESSIONAL WRITE 2.0! -----------
This Trial Disk introduces you to all the features of
Professional Write 2.0 -- the word processor designed to help
you get your work done quickly, and produce polished results
fast.
---------------------- TO GET STARTED ---------------------
WHO SHOULD READ THIS PRODUCT OVERVIEW?
If you are experienced with word processing, you may want to
read just the following startup instructions and begin.
If not, read on to find out more about the program before you
start.
---------------- TRIAL DISK SPECIFICATIONS ----------------
This Trial Disk version of Professional Write 2.0 is just
like the actual program, with some exceptions. In all cases,
you can see how the features look and work, but the following
are not fully supported:
1. You cannot save a file.
2. You can print only the first page of a document.
3. Mail merge is not available.
4. Connections to other software files are limited; you
can insert a Lotus 1-2-3 file, but not a Professional
Plan file. You can get Professional Write 1.0, 2.0
or PFS:WRITE version C files, but you cannot get or
save files created with other word processors.
5. HP soft fonts will not appear in printouts.
6. The Address Book does not add or find entries.
The full product does not have these limitations.
------------------ RUNNING THE TRIAL DISK ------------------
After exiting this Overview, you can start the Trial Disk
program from DOS in one of these ways:
1. HARD DISK SYSTEMS
For easiest operation, we recommend that you copy the Trial
Disk onto your hard disk. Then, change the default drive to
the directory where you copied the Trial Disk, type PW, and
press Enter. (You'll find complete installation instructions
near the end of this Overview.)
2. FLOPPY SYSTEMS
Put Program Disk 1 (Program Disk for 3-1/2" disks) in drive A
and the Dictionary Disk in drive B. Change the default drive
to A, if necessary. (Type A: and press Enter.) At the DOS
A> prompt, type PW and press Enter.
------------------------ NEED HELP? -----------------------
If you're unsure about what to do next while running the
Trial Disk -- just press the F1 key!
Regardless of what you're doing, you can always get help --
right on your computer screen. When you press F1-Help,
special screens appear with instructions about what to do
next, from wherever you are in the program.
In addition, you can access an on-line manual, the "Help
Menu", from anywhere in the program. Just press Ctrl-F1.
---------------------- THINGS TO TRY ----------------------
For a basic tour through Professional Write 2.0, follow these
suggestions. However, feel free to explore on your own.
After all, the best way to evaluate a new program is to try
it for yourself.
USING MENUS
When you start Professional Write, you see its Main Menu with
three choices. With CREATE/EDIT, you type a new document or
edit an old one. Use SETUP to tell Professional Write what
kind of equipment you have. Choose EXIT to leave the program
and return to DOS.
You can choose a menu item either by typing the corresponding
number, or by using the Up or Down Arrow keys to highlight it
and then pressing Enter.
Don't forget -- whenever you need help, press F1-Help.
CREATING AND EDITING IS SIMPLE
Choose Create/Edit, and you see an on-screen representation
of a piece of paper. Press F1 to see a list of cursor
movement keys and more details about the Create/Edit screen.
Try typing a sample letter -- it's as simple as using a
typewriter.
The cursor indicates where your typing will appear. You can
place the cursor anywhere and insert text. Also, don't worry
about pressing Enter at the end of a line. Unlike a
typewriter, the program takes care of ending lines.
USE PULL-DOWN MENUS TO ACCESS FEATURES
Across the top of the Create/Edit screen is the heart of
Professional Write, its pull-down menus. These menus reveal
features you use to edit, reformat, print, and save your
documents. To see one, press the indicated function key.
PULL-DOWN MENUS (cont.)
For example, try F4-FORMAT, and choose SET HEADER. A pop-up
window is displayed for you to fill in.
Press F1-Help. The instructions tell you to type the text
for the first header line at LINE 1 and for the second at
LINE 2. Use the TAB key to move between options. Press
Enter and you will see your header displayed at the top of
each page.
Try some of the other F4-Format options yourself, such as
setting margins or centering a line.
QUICK EDITING WITH SPEED KEYS
On the pull-down menus some options have Ctrl-key
combinations listed beside them. These SPEED KEYS let you
select frequently-used commands without pulling down the
menu.
For instance, Ctrl-W erases a word, Ctrl-L erases a line, and
Ctrl-I inserts a blank line. Try some of the other Speed
Keys listed on the pull-down menus.
USING THE DICTIONARY AND THESAURUS
Professional Write's dictionary can be used to check the
spelling of a single word or an entire document. It can also
suggest synonyms when you want to replace a word with a more
precise one.
Put the cursor on or after a word, and use F5-DICTIONARY to
check your spelling or find a synonym. You can add your own
words (like company names and special terms) to your personal
dictionary.
QUICKLY EDIT BLOCKS OF TEXT
When you have a change to make to a section of text, such as
a sentence or paragraph, mark it as a TEXT BLOCK. Then you
can move, copy, delete, or emphasize everything in the block
at once.
For example, put the cursor at the first word of a sentence.
Press F3 and select MARK TEXT. Use the arrow keys to
highlight a section of text and then follow the on-screen
directions to press F10. The TEXT BLOCK OPERATIONS menu
appears listing the changes you can make to the marked block.
EDIT BLOCKS (cont.)
To move the block, you would choose CUT (delete), which
removes the block and places it in temporary storage --
called the CLIPBOARD. Then just move your cursor to the new
location, press F3, and choose PASTE.
Now try marking a rectangular block and see how you can
manipulate columns of a table (press F3, highlight MARK
RECTANGLE, and press F1-Help).
ENHANCE WORDS FOR EMPHASIS
Professional Write lets you emphasize a word by boldfacing or
underlining it. Just move the cursor to any letter in the
word, and press F3. Choose either enhancement and press
Enter.
PRINTING YOUR FINISHED PRODUCT
When you're satisfied with your document, take a look at how
easy it is to print with Professional Write.
Press F2 to pull down the FILE/PRINT menu. Select PRINT
WORKING COPY to bring up the PRINT OPTIONS menu. You can
accept the settings that are provided by pressing Enter.
PRINTING (cont.)
If you actually want to print, customize the Trial Disk for
your printer. Press Escape (Esc) to go back to the Main
Menu. Choose Setup, then choose SELECT PRINTER 1. Press
F1-Help for further instructions.
KEYBOARD MACROS INCREASE YOUR PRODUCTIVITY
MACROS are a sequence of recorded keystrokes that you can
replay when needed. You can create macros that type a simple
phrase or perform all the steps in a task. Macros can save
you time and effort.
Each macro is assigned the ALT key and a letter or number
key. You replay the macro by holding down the Alt key and
the letter or number.
Your Trial Disk comes with a sample macro. To execute it,
put your cursor at the left margin in a clear space in your
document and press Alt-A. The macro types a standard ending
for a letter. It's handy if you write lots of similar
letters.
ADVANCED FEATURES
Professional Write has many more features that help you be
more productive. For example, you can:
Produce professional-quality output with laser printer fonts,
including fonts from the HP LaserJets, Apple LaserWriter,
PostScript printers, or the HP DeskJet. After using
SETUP to configure your printer, just mark the text and
choose fonts from a menu.
Quickly transfer documents to or from your secretary or
associates who use MultiMate, WordPerfect, WordStar,
Microsoft Word, PFS:First Choice or Wang PC. No
conversions are required.
Merge information into your document from other types of
files such as Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheets, Harvard Graphics
charts, or ASCII files.
Create good-looking tables using rectangular block operations
to move, erase, copy, shift, change fonts or enhance
columns of numbers or text. Use the integrated row and
column math to recalculate if you change a number.
ADVANCED FEATURES (cont.)
Enhance your documents with line drawings and boxes.
Find important documents fast with the file-finder, which
searches through the actual text of all your Professional
Write files to find any word or phrase. Get lists of
your files sorted by filename, extension, date and size.
Identify files with summary descriptions.
Create and update Address Books, containing up to 2000 names
and addresses each, which you can use for the inside
address of letters.
Format your document by changing its margins anywhere in the
document, and by adding headers and footers, varying the
line spacing, indenting paragraphs, and justifying text.
Automatically find a word or phrase and replace it with
another word or phrase.
Print form letters containing information stored in dBASE
III, Professional File or an Address Book.
--------------------- SPREAD THE WORD ---------------------
Like Professional Write, this Trial Disk is not copy-
protected. Please feel free -- in fact, we encourage you --
to copy and pass the Trial Disk on to your friends and
associates.
--------------------- WHERE TO FIND IT --------------------
Professional Write is available through leading retail stores
and corporate suppliers nationwide.
----------------- THE PROFESSIONAL SERIES -----------------
The Professional Series products work as a team to provide
the power you need to manage your information and produce
top-quality results, fast.
After you are familiar with Professional Write, you may want
to take a look at the other applications in the Professional
Series.
PROFESSIONAL FILE is a complete file management and reporting
program. You can use it to organize and analyze information,
and produce professional-quality reports. Paired with
Professional Write, you can efficiently produce large sorted
mailings and labels.
THE PROFESSIONAL SERIES (cont.)
PROFESSIONAL PLAN combines a powerful, Lotus 1-2-3-compatible
spreadsheet (release 1A or 2) with features from the most
popular add-ons, in one program that is fast to learn and
simple to remember. Plus, its presentation-quality graphs
can be merged into Professional Write documents.
PROFESSIONAL LAN PACK, a companion product to the
Professional Series applications, manages concurrent access
to the programs on a network. The Professional Series is an
easy to install, learn, and use solution for sharing
productivity software on a network.
------------------ HARD DISK INSTALLATION -----------------
Like Professional Write, this Trial Disk is not copy
protected. To install it on your hard disk, simply use the
DOS COPY command. For example, if you put Program Disk 1 in
drive A and your hard disk drive is C, you could do the
following:
C> md pwtrial (Make a subdirectory PWTRIAL)
C> cd pwtrial (Change the default to the new
subdirectory)
C> copy a:*.* (Copy the Program Disk 1 files into the
new subdirectory)
Repeat the last step for Program Disk 2 and the Dictionary
Disk.
------------------- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS -------------------
Professional Write requires 512K memory using DOS 2.0 or
above, with two 5-1/4" or two 3-1/2" floppy drives OR a hard
disk and a floppy drive. We recommend a hard disk if you are
using fonts. Supported systems: IBM PC, XT, AT, Convertible
and IBM PS/2 models 25, 30, 50, 60 and 80, and other 100% IBM
compatible desktop, portable and laptop computers. Color or

For a list of supported printers, choose SETUP from the Trial
Disk Main Menu, and choose PRINTER 1. Use PG DN to see the
complete list of supported printers.
Both 5-1/4" and 3-1/2" disks are included in the Professional
Write package.
--------------------- NETWORK SUPPORT ---------------------
Professional Write allows one user to access the program on a
network file server. Each Professional LAN Pack allows five
additional users to access Professional Write. Both
Professional Write and Professional LAN Pack support these
network operating systems: Novell Advanced NetWare (version
2.0 and above), 3COM 3Plus, IBM Token-Ring and PC Networks
